Landfill in Casablanca, Morocco
In 2008, the Commune Urbaine de Casablanca chose Edgeboro International’s local company ECOMED for the design, funding, implementation and operation of the landfill for the city and the remediation and closure of the existing landfill for a contractual period of 18 years. The Casablanca Landfill is Morocco’s largest landfill accepting approximately 1,200,000 tons per year and operates 24hr / 7 days a week.
The remediation of the more then 300 acre existing site was a major undertaking. Open uncontrolled dumping for the past 20+ years with impassable access through the site, numerous landfill fires, extensive leachate outbreaks, and plumes of noxious smoke were continually running and blowing off site choking nearby communities and causing adjacent highway auto accidents and closures. Edgeboro International and partner GESI with its local company ECOMED developed a closure plan and commenced operations to correct and install the necessary controls for the site.
The new landfill will incorporate 6 new state of the art composite lined cells to deposit the new waste, including all necessary infrastructures to properly control and manage storm water, leachate and biogas produced at the facility.
