Edgeboro Landfill Gas Collection Modification
The Edgeboro Landfill Gas Collection System Modification Project required a complete redesign of the existing methane gas collection system to accommodate the Middlesex County Utilities Authority Cell Expansion. The new cell expansion was to be constructed on top of a large closed portion of the Edgeboro Landfill which would cover approximately half of the existing gas collection system.
Major concerns were raised by both DEP and EPA which needed to approve the new design. The system was specifically designed to allow for the excessive weight of the new waste material and construction activities that will take place above while allowing the gas to be routed to the perimeter of the landfill. All the existing wells and collection system had to be incorporated into the new system. A specially designed gas management plan and temporary portable flares were utilized to ensure that gas was being effectively collected throughout the entire gas collection system during construction. The gas collection system modification included over 5,000 LF of new 18” hdpe gas collection header, 12,000 LF of lateral pipe work and 26,000 lf perforated extraction piping. The piping was installed in special collection trenches, filled with clean stone and covered with over 1,000,000 Ft2 of liner and geo-textile fabric to ensure the system performed properly and allow for the gas to be immediately collected once completed without oxygen being pulled into the system contaminating the gas.
The project was completed in an expedited schedule to allow the cell expansion to commence.
