GPU Energy Groundwater Extraction & Treatment System
Client Name: GPU Energy
The project site was previously a Manufactured Gas Plant Site in Belmar, New Jersey. The location was considered an environmentally sensitive area, which bordered the Shark River. A contaminated groundwater plume existed on the site that arbitrarily migrated into the Shark River, posing health hazards for human and marine life. Working as a subcontractor for Foster Wheeler Environmental Corporation, EII was retained to install a pump and treat groundwater extraction system. The intent was to create an inward groundwater gradient, which would prevent the contaminated groundwater from migrating off the site. The contaminated groundwater was extracted using a series of vertical wells that utilized special pneumatic pumps to pump the groundwater to a treatment facility specifically constructed for the site.
EII was responsible for trenching and installing the network of pumps, piping systems, and groundwater electrical sensors while simultaneously completing the placement of all filtration, control, and mechanical equipment within the treatment facility. Services also included the coordination and installation of all permits, securing each permit, acquiring utility hookups, and running electrical wiring to all equipment and controls. EII was also responsible for the plumbing and piping of all filtration equipment, as well as startup procedures. This process was installed and completed in a congested and heavily trafficked area and close coordination was required to prevent the disruption of the activities of the Department of Public Works, recycling center and work being accomplished adjacent to the municipal park.
Note: The work was required to be constructed during the early spring prior to the summer tourist season. Despite countless unmarked underground utilities and obstructions, the job was completed in the designated time frame.
